15 minutes of quarter- making

Quarter making, working on hospitality

Quarter making is originally a term meaning the preparation of a camp (or quarters) for troops in the army. It’s used metaphorically to refer to a process of preparation of individuals and institutions for the integration of former psychiatric patients into the community.

Quarter-making is a vision that expresses the conviction that a society is stronger and more fascinating when it makes room for meaningful differences instead of emphasizing equality and uniformity.

In 2008, quarter-making, represented by its founder Doortje Kal, received the Douglas Bennett Award from the Knowledge Centre for Rehabilitation and Recovery.

Doortje inspired me to put quarter- making in practice and together with Pameijer we introduced quarter- making in communities. Do you want to find out more about Doortje and quartermaking. Click here!

Pameijer supports people in their recovery journey to a better quality of life.

Here some examples of ways to put quarter-making into practise.

1. Pizza!

Together with Howie the Harp students & Pameijer's handyman project Klus & Werk, Renato Jeuken teached us how to build our own pizzaoven out of clay in 3 days! With this oven we want to invite neighbours to come and share stories & pizza's together.

Renato is a pizza fanatic & his mission is to humanize architecture! Yeah Renato!

2. Farmer seeks neighbour

Together with former homeless people and a group of 30 local policeman/ woman from Rotterdam Delfshaven, we transformed a closed garden into a public open permaculture paradise!

The harvest is being shared with the neighbours and the veggies are used for cooking lessons!
